Japan Supports Education in Kitgum

The Embassy of Japan is to hand over a project in Kitgum of 108,327 USD for construction of a girls’ dormitory block and procurement of beds at St. Bakhita Girls Senior Secondary School on 7 March 2013.

H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of the project.

St. Bakhita Girls Senior Secondary School is a government aided school providing full board education for more than 220 girls. Its dormitory facility, however, can only accommodate some 80 girls. The new dormitory blocks, bathrooms and latrines constructed, together with 63 double decker beds procured by the project will enable the school to accommodate all the girls and thus reducing overcrowding and preventing infectious diseases, fire and any other accidents which may occur due to overcrowding.

The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 166 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.

Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
